[Review] Masterplan - Metalmorphosis

    Actually I found Masterplan music with their 2007 album "MK II". While it may not have been a masterpiece, it certainly had its undeniable charm. Since then, the band has only released two original studio albums. I’m deliberately excluding the live release and the re-recordings album of Helloween - tracks—because even though those were penned by Masterplan co-founder Roland Grapow, they were still essentially covers rather than fresh material. So now, with new music finally arriving after a 13-year wait, I feel a slight sense of disappointment. However, I also must admit that "Metalmorphosis" is by no means a write-off.

    The record opens with the mid-tempo, heavily rhythmic, and chugging riff-driven "" (previously released as the first single, new entry in 19th (194th) week of Stef Metal Chart). It’s followed by "Electric Nights"—a faster track, even if certain passages rely purely on letting the guitars ring out in the background. It feels more engaging than the opener and boasts a more melodic solo, though it still lacks true inspiration. Generally speaking, it’s tough to point out more than a handful of standout tracks across the entire tracklist. Perhaps only "" brings a noticeable step up in quality (also currently featured on the Stef Metal Chart). After a calm keyboard intro, it erupts into a fast power metal riff, shining melodically and delivering easily the most compelling solos on the album.
    In summary: Masterplan’s new album is a consistent record built on tried-and-tested formulas that, thankfully, avoids falling into monotony. Alongside a few slightly over-engineered arrangements, there is no shortage of heavier and punchier moments. It’s a solid piece of craftsmanship, even if it leaves you wanting just a little bit more.
